Weddingbells – 25 Most Inspiring Wedding Photographers of 2012

Like I’ve said on our Facebook page, we were selected to be one of the 25 most inspiring wedding photographers of 2012 by Weddingbells magazine. We are so proud to be mentioned by Weddingbells, which, in my opinion is a critical part of Canada’s wedding institution. I don’t know of any bride that has never seen or bought a copy of their magazine. I want to thank everyone at Weddinbells for this honor! Woo!

However, the real credit goes to all our brides and grooms and their vendors who invested great time and effort on their big day. Without them, there would be no dress, flowers, shoes, table settings, boutonnieres, shoes, stationery, linens, shoes, seat covers, centerpieces, shoes, hair pieces, marriage vows, prime rib, dancing, shoes, invites and other interesting things for us to photograph. It has always been a team effort. Thank you everyone and congratulations to all the other photographers on this list!

Savannah * Asim {Chic Urban Wedding at the Palliser}

Asim and Savannah’s story unfolded just like a chic flick. Boy meets girl, falls in love at first sight. Girl hated the boy. Boy was persistent. Girl falls in love with boy soon after. Both get married and live happily ever after. It’s true. These things do happen and we love it when it does!

The two were married in a simple ceremony at the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary. Their wedding ceremony was officiated by Tamara Jones. Savannah wore a Givenchy sleeveless dress instead of a wedding gown because she wanted it to be a casual affair. They had about 20 or so of their closest friends and family join them in celebrating this event. Because Calgary had such unseasonably warm weather last weekend, we were able to spend a good amount of time making some fun wedding photos with them in the inner city. One of my favorite parts of the day was spending some time after photos having coffee and chatting after we were done. Thanks, guys!

New Orleans Bridal

Last month I bought an old film camera for the fun of it to experience what it’s like to shoot film. Although we have been using our toy cameras, this is the first time I have used something that is comparable to our professional digital cameras. I shot the following images with Caroline early one morning in New Orleans before the streets got crazy. In total, I only used up two rolls of film for a total of 32 images during the 45 or so minutes while we wandered the French Quarter. If I was shooting digital, I am certain I would have ripped through at least 300 frames during that period. The film was then sent to Josh over at Indie Film Lab for development and scanning. These are scans from Josh without further editing.

What do you think? Do you like the feel of the images?

deanna & scott {las vegas wedding at the wynn}

We met Deanna last year at her sister Charlene’s fall wedding at Silvertip in Canmore. Fast forward a year later and here we are in Las Vegas with her and Scott for their celebration. We love being with them as they are such a fun and witty couple. I find myself still smiling long after each meeting with them from being reminded of their jokes and witty exchanges! These two are soulmates.

Their wedding ceremony was at The Wynn Wedding Salon in Las Vegas followed by a reception at The Range Steakhouse at Harrah’s. It was a Las Vegas themed reception of course. My favorite item was the mini gumball slot machine which they gave away as favors. Thank you, Deanna and Scott for such a wonderful weekend!

vicki * john {wedding at hotel mcdonald}

Vicki and John first met in high school and they have been best friends ever since. Finally, after more than 13 years, they were married at the St. Joachim Catholic Church, the oldest and most special church in Edmonton. We were in awe at the amount of detail they put into constructing this church. While the guest waited, Vicki hid in a chamber beside the entrance of the church until it was time for her to walk up the aisle with her dad. We thought the elegance of Vicki’s dress complemented the feel of this church very well.

After the ceremony, everyone went to the Hotel Macdonald in downtown Edmonton. We have been to our share of hotels and the Mac is definitely one of our favorite venues. The entire feel of the building and terrace made us feel like we were somewhere in Europe. All the photos were taken there. During the photo session, we had a good time listening to John’s groomsmen heckle the two from the balcony while we were shooting! Vicki and John’s grand finale for their guests was their reception in the Wedgwood room, which takes its name from the intricate work on Wedgwood china. The ornate details in the room made for great pictures. One of my favorite photos of the day was of the two’s first dance under the domed ceiling.

Marta & Tim {Calgary DIY Barn Wedding}

Marta called it the mystery bus tour wedding. Their guests had no idea where their wedding was going to be. They were asked to meet up at Hotel Arts to be bussed down to a secret location south of Calgary. The buses arrived a few hundred yards from Shawnessy Barn and guests followed signs down a winding pathway before arriving at a shaded spot decorated with flags and hay bales for an outdoor wedding ceremony. The two were married by their close friend Jeff who is the coolest minister we have ever met. People have said they would go to church more if all ministers were like him!

Then the hoe down began! Marta had decorated Shawnessy Barn with DIY buntings, Christmas lights and photos hung from the rafters and columns. Guests were treated to a country western style barbeque dinner inside the Shawnessy Barn. Everyone was given a puzzle piece which they were supposed to put together at the end of the evening. There were burgers, salad and pies. For wedding favors, they gave away cowboy boot glass mugs. But I think my favorite details were Marta’s vintage lace dress and cowboy boot ensemble. It went so well with the casual, from-the-heart feel of the wedding.

Hailey * David {Calgary Wedding}

When we first met Hailey & David, I was just completely fascinated with their two Toyota trucks that run on used cooking oil. I’ve heard of these conversions before but it wasn’t until I met them that I’ve seen one in real life. The two of them live in a cute little farm just outside Calgary with their horses, llamas and other farm animals. Hailey teaches rock climbing and rafting and David works in the film industry. My favorite shot from their engagement session was of Hailey holding a boat paddle and David a blimp, which is a soundproof enclosure for silently taking photos on a film set. Kindda neat.

Di and I love their quiet and carefree personalities. When we are with them, there is a sense of calm and serenity. It was no different on their wedding day even with the excitement and people around us. We knew everything is going to be just perfect. The two had their wedding ceremony at the Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church in Calgary. I loved how Hailey picked a veil that covered her face. After walking up the aisle, her Dad lifted it up before giving her away. After the ceremony, we headed over to Cochrane Ranch House for a reception with all their guests.

kathryn * aleksei {calgary DIY wedding}

As we write this, Kathryn and Aleksei are serendipitously roadtripping down the west coast without a set destination in mind. We love and admire how carefree and laid back the two are. Kathryn’s vision for their day was a simple and elegant DIY wedding that feels like a country song, laid back and fun.

And what fun we had that day! It was clear they had a close knit set of friends and siblings who weren’t afraid to be silly and kick it back. They rented a white school bus to ferry everyone to the ceremony and on the way, we even stopped at a garage sale and Aleksei bought two suitcases. You can see one of them in the photos. I love Kathryn’s Vera Wang dress. It seem to just float around when she walked. After the ceremony, while the guests were having cocktails, they ditched everyone and took turns trashing around a park in their tandem bike.

Have fun on your trip guys, we’ll see you when you get back.

mag * alan {outdoor chinese wedding}

Mag and I first met when I shot her cousin April’s wedding more than 5 years ago. That was the first real wedding I had had ever shot and it was also the wedding that got me hooked. I still remember a photo of Mag I took that day when she was sitting on the grass tying ribbons for the chairs at the ceremony. We have kept in touch and become close friends ever since. Time flies and here we are on her wedding day covering the festivities and nonsense that goes along with a Chinese wedding!

Two things are staples of Chinese weddings. Punishing games for the groom and the tea ceremony. Before Alan is allowed to see Maggie on the day, he must endure the onslaught of games the bridesmaids have in store for her. First there were the underwear and baking soda. Then came these IV bags and I don’t know what happened but when the fluids started pouring, my acute gag reflex kicked in and I blanked out for a moment trying to recover! I’m glad that’s all I had experienced of these games.

After that, it was Chinese tea ceremony time. In the tea ceremony, the elders are served tea and in return, red packets and gifts were exchange. I love their Chinese tea cups and all the colorful herbs they put in their tea. Then Mag changed into her white sequined dress and we all headed over to Riley Park for the an outdoor wedding ceremony. This wedding was very special because out of all the family present, Di and I have shot three other couples’ weddings.
